London Art Fair

I trudged through the snow to the London Art Fair at the Business Design Centre in Islington yesterday. It's not the swankiest venue, but it's a great opportunity to see loads of art under one roof. One of my favourite exhibits was by an artist called Nancy Fouts, her work is great fun, very playful and surreal without resorting to shock tactics. It's also very accessible and easy to 'get' the themes she's dealing with. I'm all for challenging and difficult art which makes you think a bit, but it's also a pleasant change to come across something which just works.

Nancy Fouts is represented by Pertwee, Anderson and Gold in Soho which is one of my favourite galleries. I haven't managed to catch every show they've had on, but I've always enjoyed myself when I've been. One of the best shows I've seen of recent years was an exhibition they put on by an artist called Kate McGwire. She'd created some phenomenal site-specific pieces made entirely of feathers. You can see a bit of it in the image below but it's one of those pieces that you really need to see in the flesh to properly appreciate it (like most art I guess!).

If you get the chance to see Nancy Fouts or Kate McGwire's work then I highly recommend it, and if you're ever at a loose end in Soho then it's definitely worth popping in to Pertwee, Anderson and Gold to see what they've got going on.
