St Bride
Over the weekend I went for a Time Out & National Trust tour of the St Bride Foundation building with some friends of mine. We were given a quick history of the building and saw some of its treasured books such as the Kelmscott Chaucer, a beautifully-printed version of the Canterbury Tales illustrated by Edward Burne-Jones and designed by William Morris. They also have a first-edition copy of Samuel Johnson's dictionary which must be worth a few quid.
The real highlight of the afternoon though was a talk on letterpress and printing in general down in their workshop. Surrounded by presses and cases full of lead type we were given a great potted history by a volunteer called Ben (I think?) who was hugely enthusiastic and knowledgeable on the subject. They run a whole series of print workshops there which look like they would be great fun and well worth a look. Bizarrely we then finished up in the old bath house which is now the Bridewell Theatre.
It was really nice to visit somewhere a bit different on a dull Sunday afternoon and get to have a proper nose around the building. I'm pretty geeky about type and print in general so I was easily pleased, but I can definitely recommend a visit if you get the chance.

Milan
Just got back from a weekend in Como and Milan. Failed miserably to take any good shots as I was too busy eating my own body weight in Italian food. This photo is possibly the best of a bad bunch. Boh...

1-4
Spotted these gates on my lunchtime wanderings. The photos didn't really work for me, but the sequence sort of lent itself to a quick and easy GIF.

Dawn of digital
After years of devotion to my weird and wonderful collection of analogue cameras I've finally dragged myself kicking and screaming into the modern world. I've cracked and bought myself a digital SLR after much indecision. Of course being a camera geek it's compulsory that you spend at least four months reading endless reviews before making any kind of purchase. In the end I plumped for a Nikon D7000 to sit alongside my much loved old Nikon F3.
I'm still getting to grips with not having to wind the film on after each shot, but I had a little play with it last night and I'm enjoying it so far. Just for fun I thought I'd have a quick go at animating the Mexican skull above. Clearly lighting isn't one of my strengths, and with the benefit of hindsight I should have turned the TV off first as well but not to worry. It was really good fun mucking about with something a bit different that would have been a bit more of a faff using film.
It's a whole brave new world out there of memory cards, video, RAW files and all kinds of new-fangled technology. I'm not quite sure I'm ready for it yet, but I guess even a stubborn fucker like myself has to give it a go...

Typography of Recession
It's not an uncommon sight on the high street these days by any means, but there was something about the care and craft that had gone into these two examples from a bar on New Oxford St that caught my eye.

Bainbridge Studios Poster
I've been having a lot of fun this past couple of days designing an A2 poster for my friend Lucy Bainbridge. She wanted an A2 poster to help her promote the screen printing courses she runs in West Norwood at her studio and gallery. It was a fairly simple brief, she wanted a clean and slightly retro look, and as she was going to be screen printing the posters herself they needed to use a limited colour palette.
Here's a few of the variants I was playing around with:
Lucy is a great teacher, so if you fancy picking up some new screen printing skills (or brushing up on some old ones), give her a shout at Bainbridge Studios.

And this was the design Lucy picked, I'm really looking forward to seeing the finished article.
