But Beautiful

I just finished reading Geoff Dyer's "But Beautiful" on the way into work this morning. It's a superb, semi-fictionalised, selective history of jazz. You needn't know or care much about jazz to appreciate the quality of Geoff Dyer's writing and his imaginative scope. It's hard to describe if you're rubbish at writing like me, but if you like your fact to read more like fiction then it's an astonishingly good read.

I'd already read his great photography book "The Ongoing Moment" last year and enjoyed that massively. Despite being obsessed with photography, I probably enjoyed "But Beautiful" even more. Fascinating as many photographers are, there aren't many whose lives have been as interesting as the legendary jazz musicians.
